A Note From Ms. Gurn

The countdown begins! Only a few short weeks until the end of the school year. We will continue to learn and work hard this week despite the buzz of summer time. Monday is an early dismissal at 2:00 pm. On Tuesday, the students will practice for the Spring Music Concert. Join us Thursday at USC Band Hall. The children must arrive at 6:30; concert begin at 7:00.

This Week In Class

Reading/Writing Workshop: This week we will study the plot diagram: exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution. These parts help us to follow the sequence of events in a story. We will apply these parts to our new novel, Fever. Test will be Thursday.

Spelling Words: The spelling/vocabulary words this week will focus around common spelling patterns of double consonants in the middle of words and high frequency words. Test this Friday.

Science:  This week we will end our rocks and minerals unit with a final test on Wednesday. Then, we will begin a new unit on how humans negatively and positively impact the environment. What can we do to help keep our Earth clean?

Social Studies:  This week we will wrap up our unit on the Vietnam War. Then, we will begin a new unit on Modern America/Post Vietnam. We will start with Nixon’s presidency; analyzing the Watergate Scandal.

Theology: This week we will be studying the Nicene Creed and Apostles’ Creed. How are they similar and different? What does the Nicene Creed say about our beliefs? How is it organized?

4th Grade Social Studies:  This week we will finish our Civil War unit; beginning the era of Reconstruction. How will the South recover and rejoin the Union without conflict?

6th Grade Social Studies: This week we will end our Renaissance unit and begin a new unit on Mesoamerica- Incas, Mayas and Aztecs. How did these cultures help to contribute to modern art and architecture?
