A Note From Mrs. Horabik

It is hard to believe this is the last week of the first quarter. It has gone so quickly. I am proud of the work and progress second graders have shown so far and it will be exciting to see their continued growth this year. This week we have an early dismissal on Monday at 2:00pm. Aftercare is available. On Friday, October 27, 2017, there is no school for students due to a teacher in-service day.  Finally, I wanted to let you know that students will wear their Saints Costumes to Mass on November 1,2017 and will process down the aisle with Father Linsky. All parents are welcome!
This Week In Class

Reading: This week we will read Fall stories. We will work on Reading comprehension.

 

Spelling/Vocabulary: No Spelling test this week

 

Social Studies: We will be studying Immigration. Who are immigrants?

 

Science: Students will learn about pushing and pulling. Are you pushing the door open or pulling the door open?

 

Math: Students will work on proficiency in addition and subtraction. Do you know your Math facts to 20?

 

Religion: This week we will talk about how Jesus is faithful.

October 16th-20th

A Note From Mrs. Horabik

It is already the middle of October! Last week I sent home information on the Saint Project. If you need to borrow a robe, there are some here at the school. Please let me know as soon as possible. Please check your child’s take home folders nightly. Some students are bringing back papers from the previous day. I look forward to a productive week!

 

This Week In Class

Reading: This week we will read Super Storms. We will study story structure.

 

Spelling/Vocabulary: This week’s spelling words are dish, chest, such, thin, push, shine, chase, white, while, these and flash. The test will be on Friday. There will also be a bonus word. This word will not count against their grade but will help focus on what we have been working on throughout the week.

 

Social Studies: We will be studying Immigration. Who are immigrants?

 

Science: Students will learn about reading maps. What do the points on the Compass Rose stand for?

 

Math: Students will work on choosing the correct operation. Should I add or subtract?

 

Religion: This week we will talk about celebrating Ordinary Time.

October 9th-13th

A Note From Mrs. Horabik

This week there is no school on Monday, October 9, 2017 to celebrate Columbus Day. We have a busy week. On October 11, 2017 we have the Pet Blessing at 2:30pm. Next, on October 12,2017 we will be going to the Fire Prevention parade. If you are VIrtus/ Safe Haven trained and able to come this would be appreciated. Finally, On Friday, October 13, 2017, we will do the Living Rosary. I look forward to all the exciting events.

Reading: This week we will read The Ugly Vegetables. We will study story structure.

 

Spelling/Vocabulary: This week’s spelling words are dress, spell, class, full, add, neck, stuck, kick, rock, black, and doll. The test will be on Friday. There will also be a bonus word. This word will not count against their grade but will help focus on what we have been working on throughout the week.

 

Social Studies: We will be studying Christopher Columbus. Who is Christopher Columbus? Also we will have a continent quiz on Friday.

 

Science: Students will learn about bodies of Water.

 

Math: Students will work on fact families. What are fact families?

 

Religion: This week we will talk about Our Lady of Fatima What are the apparitions seen in Fatima?

October is here! This week progress reports come home in Tuesday Folders. Please sign them and return. Grandparent’s day is October 6, 2017. Please remember if a Grandparent is taking a student home to send in a note signed by the parent.

 

This Week In Class

Reading: This week we will read Animals Building Homes. We will use context clues.

 

Spelling/Vocabulary: This week’s spelling words are next, end, camp, sank, sing, drink, hunt, stand, long, stamp, pond, and bring. The test will be on Friday. There will also be a bonus word. This word will not count against their grade but will help focus on what we have been working on throughout the week.

 

Social Studies: Students learn about Continents and bodies of water. We will locate and label Continents and bodies of water on a Map.

 

Science: Students will learn about landforms. What is the difference between a mountain and a hill?

 

Math: Students will work on subtraction related to addition. How can you check your answer?

 

Religion: This week we will talk about the praying the Rosary. Why is it important to pray the Rosary?

Social Studies: Students learn about Continents and bodies of water. We will locate and label Continents and bodies of water on a Map.

Math: Students will work on subtraction. Can you count backwards to find the sum?

It is hard to believe September is almost over. We have been working hard on our class work. It is so impressive to see how the students collaborate together. The effort they have put in their work is outstanding! This week please join us on Thursday, September 21, 2017, in Neglia Hall for our PTO meeting. All students who have a parent present will be able to participate in a dress down day.

Reading: This week we will be reading  Diary of a Spider . Is this informational text or realistic fiction?

 

Spelling/Vocabulary: This week’s spelling words are doze, nose, use, rose, pole, close, cute, woke, mule, role, and tune. The test will be on Friday. There will also be a bonus word. This word will not count against their grade but will help focus on what we have been working on throughout the week.

 

Social Studies: Students learn about markets. What happens at the market? How are goods brought to the market? How does a market help the community?

 

Science: We will be continuing our studies on Matter. How does matter change?

 

Math: Students will add three and four numbers to find sums. How is the strategy for adding three numbers different from adding four numbers?

 

Religion: This week we will talk about the importance of praising God. What are some of the ways we can praise God?

Math: Students will use the doubles strategy to find sums. Can you find a sum that is a double plus one?

Religion: This week we will talk about the importance showing God gratitude. What are some of the things we are thankful for?

This week there is no school on Monday in observance of Labor Day. Students will bring home their Reading log this week. Please ensure your child reads for twenty minutes each night. They may read individually, partner read or take turns reading with an adult. We had a great start to the school year and I look forward to a prosperous week!

Math: Students will continue to work on addition problems. Can you use the count on strategy?

Religion: This week we will remembering God’s gifts. What are God’s gifts? How can we show God reverence?

Welcome to Second Grade! Each week I will have a newsletter posted by Tuesday. On this newsletter you will find out about lessons and reminders for the week. Please feel free to email me with any questions. My email is shorabik@stpeterscatholicschool.org . We are going to have a terrific year!

 

This Week In Class

Reading: Students will read Henry and Mudge. Students love this story! We will focus on realistic fiction. How is realistic fiction different than other fiction stories? We will also focus on Sequence of events.

 

Spelling/Vocabulary: This week’s spelling words are sad, dig, jam, glad, list, win, flat, if, fix, rip, kit, and mask. The test will be on Friday. There will also be a bonus word. This word will not count against their grade but will help focus on what we have been working on throughout the week.

 

Social Studies: Students will learn about communities. What is a community? Who are the people that make up your community?

 

Science: We will be starting our Unit on Matter. What is matter? What are the different types of matter. Students will focus on Science Vocabulary.

 

Math: Students will be solving and writing addition facts in the sums of 20. Please work on math addition problems for five minutes each night.

Religion: : This week we will focus on the Sign of the Cross, Mass reverence and how God creates us. The students will learn Why do we make the Sign of the Cross? What is proper Mass participation?

Welcome to 2Nd Grade! My name is Mrs. Horabik. I am looking forward to getting to know you and your family. This week we will do activities that will build our cohesive classroom community. We will go over schedules, procedures and rules. There will be several activities for students to get to know each other. As a reminder, please send in a healthy snack each day this week.
