Happy New Year! We hope that you and your family enjoyed the Christmas Break and the pleasure of being with family and friends.
In Religious Education, the children will develop a greater awareness of God’s gift of animals, birds and fish. The children will try to learn the names of various animals, birds and fish. In class, the children will use bar graphs to help visually classify animals, birds and fish according to their habitat or environment in which they live.
In Science we will incorporate winter season, migration and hibernation. The children will learn about the different kinds of bears, where they live, how they take care of their babies and how they protect themselves.
In Social Studies we will talk about the life of an American hero, Martin Luther King Jr., and his importance in United States history. We will ask the children what their dreams are and how they can be positive role models.
In Math, we will be talking about the “New Year”, the twelve months of the year and learning about important things that happen during each month. The children will also, learn about the concept of measuring time – today, yesterday, tomorrow, day before, day after, as well as, weeks, months and years. At home please continue helping your child to identify, create, extend and verbally describe a pattern of concrete objects.
During our story time, the children will predict events in a story (we will ask questions during the story telling “What will the character do next?”) or the children will be asked to provide a new story ending (after reading a story, we will let the children think and dictate their own story endings).
We will end the month of January with a fun filled week in celebration of “Catholic School Week”. We will be studying the school’s history and what it means to be attending a Catholic School.
Please keep a seasonally appropriate change of clothes’ long sleeves shirt, long pants including underwear and socks in your child’s backpack for the cold weather. Please label everything.
