Classroom News February 19th- 22nd

Spelling: Due to the shortened school week, we will review previously tested spelling words. Please continue to prepare for the spelling test on Friday. Spelling words: the, said, fly, make, from, you, what, she, gem, broke.

Reading/writing: Students will understand the relationship between two or more words using synonyms, antonyms, homonyms.

SW understand the parts of a book (front and back cover, title, author, illustrator).

Social Studies: Students will identify locations using cardinal directions. Students will also continue discussing different features on a globe.

Science: Students will discuss how position, motion, and speed play a role in how sounds are heard.

Math: Students will understand and recognize the ones, tens, and hundreds place values. Students will work with cubes and rods to form bundles.

Religion: Students will discuss and review Mk 10:13-16 Let My Children Come. Students will also discuss Mk 6:45-52 Jesus Walks On Water.

Classroom News February 11th- 15th

Spelling: Students will take their next spelling test this Friday. Please review the following words together: flag, black, cap, cliff, blink, flake, she, he, blue, climb.

Reading/Writing: Students will continue to work on Personal Narratives and learn about text features. Students will also practice forming complete sentences using different word family words (oo, th, sh, ph, ch).

Religion: This week we will continue to review the teachings of Jesus at the consecration and communion of the mass. Students will also read and discuss (Mk:10:13-16) Let the Children Come.

Science: Students will understand that sound originates from vibrating sounds.

Social Studies: Students will use a globe to locate the North and South Poles, the equator, and cardinal directions.

Math: Students will write numbers as ones and tens up to 120. They will also identify the ones, tens, and hundreds place.

Additional Notes:

-Parents please ensure that your child is turning in each weekly practice packet in order to receive the next packet for that week.

-This Thursday we will be celebrating Valentine’s Day in class. If your child plans to exchange Valentine’s Day cards, please ensure that every student in class receives one. I will be sending an email with our classroom roster for your reference.

Classroom News January 22nd- 25th

Spelling: Students will be taking their spelling test this Friday.  Please continue to review the words that were provided last week (hi, my, fly, by, cry, I, like, nine, sky, try).

Reading/Writing: Students will learn about the writing process and begin to form personal narratives in class.   Students will also practice using consonant diagraphs: sh, th, ch.

Religion: Students will review David and Goliath to discuss David’s faith in God.  Students will also read and discuss Daniel in the Lion’s Den (Dn 6:2-29).

Math: Students  will find the range, mode, and median for a set of data.

Science: Students will identify and compare physical properties of solids, liquids, and gasses.

Social Studies: Students will identify a compass rose and cardinal directions on a map.

Religion: Students will learn from the accounts of David and Goliath (1 sm 17: 1- 11).

Reading/Writing: Students will identify cause and effect relationships in stories, and the difference between fiction and non fiction stories.  Students will practice using alliteration and onomatopoeias in their writing.

Spelling- Test Friday: hi, my, fly, by, cry, I like, nine, sky, try.

Math: Students will continue to interpret picture graphs and use data from tally charts.

Science: Students will describe the differences between bodies of water and land forms.

Social Studies: Students will identify the differences between a buyer and a seller.

This is the same testing that was taken at the beginning of the school year.

Math: Students will be able to interpret pictograph and tally chart data.

Social Studies: Students will discuss what choices people need to make when buying items and saving money.

Science: Students will identify different types if land on Earth (continent, river, mountain, valley, plain).

Religion: Students will be able to explain how to show forgiveness.  Students will also discuss temptations, trespassing, wants, and needs.

Reading/ Writing: Students will identify cause and effect relationships in stories. Students will also classify fiction and non fiction texts.

Students will identify the use of  onomatopoeias and alliteration in writing.

Spelling: The spelling test will be this Friday (rose, bone, cone, hole, poke, nose, gave, broke, stone, make).

January 3rd- 4th Classroom News

Hello First Grade Families!

I hope you all  had a restful and enjoyable Christmas break! I am so excited to begin the New Year with you and look forward to our continued learning together.  These next two days will be spent reviewing classroom rules and procedures.  We will also be reviewing content that was discussed before Christmas break.

Classroom News December 17th- 20th

Spelling: Due to the short school week, there will not be a spelling test.  Students will be reviewing the following words in class: this, them, when, was, space, they, gave, like, make, size.

Reading/Writing: Students will work on “SK” words and use them in complete sentences.  Students will continue to read in small groups while identifying the 5w’s in each story.

Religion: Students will continue to prepare for the coming of Christ by showing kindness to others.  Students will write about and demonstrate how they can show acts of kindness in school and at home.

Science: Students will identify similarities and differences between the sun, planets, moon, and stars.

Social Studies: Students will be able to explain why people earn and save money.

Math:  Students will solve addition and subtraction problems while using a strategy.  (examples: writing each step to solve, pictures, and cubes).

Classroom News December 10th – 14th

Reading/Writing: Students will continue to read and record the 5w’s in complete sentences.  Students will also identify conjunctions and use them in complete sentences.

Spelling: The students will take a spelling test this Friday. Spelling words: ride, like, nine, time, size, five, they, you, twice, slide.

Social Studies: Students will understand the nature of goods and services.  Students will also understand the importance of saving money.

Science: Students will identify moon phases and planets.

Math: Students will write and solve addition and subtraction facts using pictures and and manipulatives.

Religion: Students will continue to prepare for Jesus during this Advent season.  Student will also learn about how Saint Peter was one of Jesus’ best friends.
