A Note From Mrs. Phillips
The school year is starting off with a bang! Our first hurricane of the season is threatening our state. We stand with many as we pray for all those affected by this monster of a storm. If there is any change in the status of our school day I will notify you by the Remind App first, and then by email as soon as I am able. Thank you to all who have signed up for Remind and I highly encourage those who have not, to do so.
In your child’s STAR binder, we added an extra work packet for inclement weather. They are not to complete this unless asked by me to do so. Just keep it in there as a precaution.
MAP testing begins this week for the school, but our class will not test until next week. More information to come.
In class this week…
Religion: In religion this week, the class will discuss the Apostles’ Creed and its meaning as well as the Trinity. We will learn how we become to know God is one.
Reading: The class has begun an author study on Tomie dePaola! We will continue to read his books and understand their deeper meaning. Tomie dePaola was a devout Catholic and intertwines his stories with his faith. I will continue assessing each individual student and their reading ability this week and next to ensure they receive the correct reading instruction in class. We are currently using the Fountas and Pinnell Reading Assessment.
Language Arts: The students will begin this year learning how to write a letter. In backpacks on Friday, your student came home with a Friday Letters folder. Each Friday, your child will write you a letter about the week. Over the weekend, it is your homework to write back to them on the back side of that week’s letter. On Monday mornings, they will read your letter! I felt this was a great way to start each week! The class will also work on what creates a good complete sentence. The students will have a new spelling list this week and we will text on Friday. STAR homework is due Friday as well.
Math: We will work on place value and forms of numbers this week. The school has begun using a new math series, so please be patient as I learn this new series and all it entails.
Science: We will begin the year learning about the Scientific Method and the proper way to complete a science experiment. The class will set up Science Lab Books to be used in class and at home to study from. We will complete our first science lab this week!
Social Studies: The class will begin this year by learning about our South Carolina Regions. To begin our region study, the class will focus on map skills this week and next. It is important to understand how to read a map and what coordinates are.
