This Week in Class

This week we will continue our study of the Bible and how it relates to Catholic Social Teaching. We will continue to discuss the life and dignity of the human person as well as Care for all of God’s creation.  Students will explore the Old and New Testaments and delve deeper into the history of scripture and tradition of the Catholic Church. We will also practice our prayers for the Rosary, and learn about the different mysteries we ponder as we pray.

This week in literature we will focus on determining the main idea of both fiction and nonfiction passages. We will read different stories and determine the main ideas as well as the themes of each. Also, we will work cooperatively with our ELA to develop well written, cohesive summaries of our findings.

This week we will continue our unit on sentences. Students will practice different methods of writing sentences as well as learning more about Power Writing. In Power Writing, we will learn the different “Powers” of sentences. We will then use these powers to develop prewriting outlines for writing and then work to turn them into 3-5 sentence “Powergraphs.” Power writing helps to keep our writing organized and cohesive. Students will also learn how to use transition words appropriate to the types of writing they produce.

Also this week, students will complete their second unit of derivational word sorts. Students will focus on how each word is spelled and any spelling changes that occur when adding suffixes to the word. Students will also work to craft strong sentences that use context clues to help the reader to understand the meaning of each word. The spelling test for this unit will be on Tuesday, October 1, 2019. The vocabulary test will be held on Wednesday, October 2, 2019.

Word Sort 2:

Swampy, silently, merrily, squirmy, velvety, rapidly, secretly, greedily, squeaky, seriously, fluently, hastily, wealthy, skinny, eagerly, readily, scratchy, generously, shaggy, politely, silvery, briefly, spotty, bravely

This week will continue our Unit 2 studies, which build upon the concepts learned in Unit 1. We will focus on solving word problems with  missing addends, figuring out how to find the value for a missing number in subtraction problems, adding three digit numbers, and subtracting two and three digit numbers including the use of regrouping. The next test is presently scheduled for Wednesday, October 9, 2019.

Social Studies

Students did a great job learning about the Northeast Region of the United States! Our test on this region will be on Wednesday, October 2, 2019.  Students will need to know the names and locations of each state, the capital of each state, the climate, geographical features, local landmarks, and natural resources within each region. Check your child’s interactive notebook for our region mini-booklets. Following this test. Students will begin their study of the Southeast region of the United States.

Students will take a test on each region before we do our cumulative assessment for the entire United States. To help your student learn the names of each state and capital, please take a look at the following video.

This week we will continue our in depth study of the scientific method. In our interactive notebooks, students will take notes and do activities focused upon using inferences to create hypotheses. Students will differentiate inferences from facts. They will also explore testable questions and how to properly write a hypothesis.
