A Note From Mrs. Phillips
The best laid plans… I did have the best of intentions to get to everything I had mentioned last week. However, due to Hurricane Dorian and the continued Fountas and Pinnell testing, we did not get to much of it. This week, we have MAP Testing on both Monday and Wednesday mornings. So yet again, our regularly scheduled lessons will be put aside until we are finished. See the subjects below for more detail.
In class this week…
Religion: In religion this week, the class will discuss the Apostles’ Creed and its meaning. We will learn how we become to know God is one. We did receive Religion workbooks last week, so we will delve into those this week!
Reading: The class will continue our author study on Tomie dePaola! We will continue to read his books and understand their deeper meaning. Tomie dePaola was a devout Catholic and intertwines his stories with his faith. This week, the students will not connect the various stories they have read. We will compare and contrast settings, plots, and characters. I will continue assessing each individual student and their reading ability this week and next to ensure they receive the correct reading instruction in class. We are currently using the Fountas and Pinnell Reading Assessment.
Language Arts: The class will continue work on what creates a good and complete sentence. The students will use the spelling list from last week and we will test on Friday. STAR homework is due Friday as well. After looking at their spelling assignments this past week, the class will also work on the concept of alphabetical order with our words.
Math: We will work on place value and forms of numbers this week. The school has begun using a new math series, so please be patient as I learn this new series and all it entails.
Science: We will begin the year learning about the Scientific Method and the proper way to complete a science experiment. The class will set up Science Lab Books to be used in class and at home to study from. We will complete our first science lab this week! (Fingers crossed!)
Social Studies: The class will begin this year by learning about our South Carolina Regions. To begin our region study, the class will focus on map skills this week and next. It is important to understand how to read a map and what coordinates are.
