Week 5- September 17, 2019

Our Homework:

  • Read for 15-20 minutes each  evening and record in the reading log.
  • Unload and check Communication folder each evening
  • Weekly Packet is sent home on Mondays and should be returned and completed the following Monday. This week’s focuses on Short and Long I sounds and basic addition between 0-9.
  • Spelling Words- this week there are 12 words that follow the short /I/ and long /I/ phonics patterns. Tests are always on Mondays.

In class this week…

Religion: In religion this week, we are learning about the stories of Mary and the Annunciation from Gabriel, Jesus’ birth/ the Nativity, and Jesus as a child in the temple. We also will be reading Jesus Calling each morning during Morning Meeting, as well as learning about a new Saint each day. After lunch, we do a quiet read aloud from the Children’s Bible. As we do each day, we practice Reverence to God, and respect for our teachers, ourselves and our classmates. We will begin learning structured prayer strategies later this week.

Reading: The class will continue to work on our weekly story in Journeys called “The Storm”. I will continue to assess each individual student and their reading ability this week and next to ensure they receive the correct reading instruction in class. We are currently using the Fountas and Pinnell Reading Assessment. I am currently reading Fairy Tales, Fables, and Folktales aloud.

Language Arts (Grammar and Writing):   This week in ELA we will be working on writing the upper and lower cases of “D and E”.  We will be reinforcing basic writing strategies like holding our paper and pencil correctly, while sitting up straight with our feet on the floor. We work in our Interactive Notebooks each day, utilizing various prompts to enhance and perfect our writing skills. We will also be working on long I, short I, long A, and short A through daily Orton Gillingham inspired phonics drills. In grammar, we are learning about Nouns.

Math:  We are practicing basic addition and subtraction as it related to place value for 0-9. We will begin introducing the concept of “Base 10” as it relates to numbers.

Science: We are continuing to work on Inquiry, observation, comparing and classifying, measurement, recording data, making models, and communicating.

Social Studies:   Students will continue to work through Unit 1 in our Social Studies reader and discuss family, leaders, community, and country.
